 Shap Abbey

SHAP ABBEY

Hidden from view in a secluded hollow beside the River Lowther is Shap Abbey, built in the late 12th century. For hundreds of years, it was the home of an obscure religious order known as the Premonstratensians or ‘white canons’. The canons were from an order of monks that originated in northern France and who sought particularly isolated and lonely locations for their abbeys.

Shap Abbey is featured in Vivienne Crow's latest book, Walks with History, published by Northern Eye Books.
