The early bird…

The rewards that come from working with good photographers far outweigh the minor discomforts!

Early light on Skye's Trotternish Peninsula

“Let’s meet before dawn. That way we’ll get the best light.” As an outdoor writer, when a photographer says those words to me, I have two immediate and simultaneous responses. On the one hand, I groan inwardly at the thought of getting up at stupid-o-clock but, on the other, I know the rewards will far outweigh the tribulations of having to separate myself from the duvet a little earlier than normal.

That proved to be the case when I worked with Marcus McAdam on Skye in the autumn of 2023. I got to see the Trotternish Peninsula in the best possible light and, more importantly, the images that appeared in BBC Countryfile magazine were absolutely gorgeous.

The photo I’ve used here is one of mine from that trip, but to see how Marcus’s beautiful images were used in Countryfile, visit my magazine features page.
